Amanda Little, her husband, and their friends launched ABBY & FINN with the lofty goal of hitting on each of these constants—and so far, so good. Not only have they developed a subscription model that offers the convenience (delivered to your door), flexibility (purchase more than 1 size per box, easily cancel or adjust your subscription), and affordability (they’re less than Huggies and Pampers) one should expect in a subscription model. The diapers are made from environmentally conscious materials and are free from chlorine, fragrance, heavy metals, lotion, latex, allergens, and substances known to be harmful to the environment. If that isn’t enough to win you over, their giveback model aims to help the 1 in 3 American families who simply cannot afford diapers. For every monthly subscription box purchased, ABBY & FINN donates 30 diapers to one of their community partner organizations with a goal to donate 1 million diapers this year.
The short version of all this? ABBY & FINN is raising the bar and changing the diaper game as we know it. We sat down with ABBY & FINN co-founder Amanda Little to get the inside scoop on what things are like behind-the-scenes at this diaper company doing good:
What led you to start ABBY & FINN? ABBY&FINN started when my husband and I realized that we were spending over $180 a month to diaper our two girls, which we thought was nuts! We wanted to use high-quality products that were free of harmful chemicals but didn’t think it needed to be so expensive. We also found that our girls regularly didn’t finish a diaper size when we bought in bulk, so we were left with a bunch of diapers that were too small and we couldn’t use. We wanted a subscription that actually grew with our kids with the ability to mix sizes in the same box at an affordable price. After diving into the world of diapers, we realized that 1 in 3 families in America struggles to simply afford diapers and that’s why our give back model is built into our business and is part of our name; FINN stands for Families IN Need.
Your brand, product, and mission are amazing. There’s a lot going on! What’s something you want the world to know about ABBY & FINN that doesn’t always come across in marketing? ABBY&FINN is a by parent, for parent, family run company that is dedicated to providing high quality, responsibly manufactured products at an affordable price. We strive to mitigate diaper waste with our flexible subscription model, our eco-conscious diapers and our commitment to giving back to the community. With every subscription box sold, ABBY&FINN donates 30 diapers to families in need across America through our non-profit partner organizations. Generally, our partners use the diapers as incentives for participation in family programs like taking kids to wellness check-ups, attending parenting classes, finishing school, etc. To date, we have donated over 400,000 diapers and hope to donate one million by the end of 2019.
We also believe that all parents should have access to clean, high-quality diapers free of chlorine and other harmful substances. That is why our diapers are at a price that is truly competitive with other big box, generic brands. ABBY&FINN diapers are actually more affordable than Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Little Movers when compared at an average price per diaper across sizes 1-6!
Now for the tough question: what’s your absolute favorite product from your own brand? (We promise not to tell the others.) Our wipes! We launched our new wipes at the end of last year and I absolutely love them. They are made in New Zealand and contain 99.7% triple purified New Zealand water, natural soybean amino acid, organic aloe vera, and natural vitamin E. That’s it! They have the perfect amount of thickness, texture, and moisture to tackle the biggest messes, but are also gentle and soothing for baby’s sensitive skin.
What’s your absolute favorite (baby/kid) product from not your brand? Make My Day Product’s baby bibs. They are so cute and functional! They are made of soft, BPA free silicon and come in all sorts of great styles. The best part is they are dishwasher safe!
GREAT choice. While we’re giving tips…what’s your best piece of advice for a mom with an idea? I would encourage her to listen to her heart, take a risk and go for it! Five years ago as a stay at home mom with a background in sports marketing, I never would have imagined myself helping run a diaper company, and now I couldn’t imagine it any other way! If you have an idea and the passion, follow that drive and you will find your way.
What are the most important elements in your life that allow you to create boundaries and balance in your life as mother and business woman? This is something I’m always working on. I have to remind myself to set work aside, put my phone away during family time and take a break. Being a small family run office, we also welcome kids (and dogs) at work. In reality, as working parents, it’s not always realistic to stop your work day when the kids get out of school. If needed, our girls will come to the office after school and help us decorate the walls with some homemade artwork!
Amanda, a Colorado native and mother of two, co-founded ABBY&FINN with her husband, Lance, and their close friends, Matt and Kyle Anderson. Amanda worked in the Media Sales and Marketing group at IMG where she helped manage official sponsors of Wimbledon and The Open. She then continued her career at ESPN for a number of years in the Media Research division where she analyzed media consumption and purchase behaviors across various platforms and specifically targeted demographics. As a mom, Amanda wanted to create a convenient, flexible and affordable baby brand for parents that was dedicated to helping families in need. Amanda enjoys skiing and playing tennis, eating salted chocolate ice cream and can do a great T-Rex impersonation.
