Just as the days of oversized house dresses for maternity wear are long gone, so are the days of basic “It’s a Boy! or Girl!” blue-and-pink baby shower decorations. What’s trending now? Our friend Candice Nielsen, Merchant Associate for Baby, Kids, & Maternity Departments at Jane.com, tells us that today’s baby showers are all about having fun and revolve around the things we love best — delicious food, gorgeous decorations, and celebrating with our friends and family.

A good party starts with a theme to tie everything together. We are loving a “Ready to Pop!” themed baby brunch featuring popcorn, popcorn toppings, soda pop, cake pops, and balloons. Looking for something nature-themed? Try Woodland Boho! Offer guests a trail mix bar and naked cake set out on tree slice platters. Decorate with succulents and woodsy garland, and snack on chocolate-dipped marshmallows on a stick. Going for something a bit more chic? Look for metal-inspired decor. Bronze and rose gold mixed with blush is big right now. Pair it pretty flowers and tea for an Insta-worthy affair. If you’re embracing both genders (as many are!), opt for a co-ed BBQ with sliders, mini mac & cheese, lemonade, watermelon, picnic tablecloth, mini hot dogs, potato salad, and apple pie.

Remember the days of trying to guess how many squares of toilet paper it would take to wrap around the mom-to-be (seriously, why did we do this?). This game is out with the oversized house dresses. But don’t skip out on the games all together!  Just give them an modern day upgrade for some real entertainment that’s laugh-out-loud funny. Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Advice for mom-to-be and wishes for baby: Genius. EVERYONE has advice for moms.
  • Who’s That Baby?: Ask guests to bring a baby photo. Hang them on a line with clothespins and try to figure out who is who.
  • Best Instagram Pic: Snap a photo with the mama-to-be. Most “likes” snags a prize!
  • DIY Wardrobe: Have each guest decorate a onesie or bib for baby with fabric markers.
  • The Price is Right:  Guess the price of common baby items (that car seat costs how much?!).
  • Gender Reveal: It’s the ultimate in suspense! Colored frosting-filled cakes and cupcakes are still a big hit.

Speaking of cakes… Cakes are still in, but we’re seeing other treats take center stage, like macaroons, cupcakes, and donuts. Rice crispy treat pops, chocolate dipped pretzels, and chocolate-covered strawberries are favorites. Not into cake? You’re not alone. Baby brunches are on the rise. Just add mimosas (virgin for mama) while mom-to-be opens the gifts.

And speaking of gifts… a party favor is a great way to say ‘thank you’ to guests for attending and celebrating mama and her soon-to-be baby. Baby shower guests are currently swooping up mini-manicure kits, sweets-to-go like chocolate, flavored popcorn, cookies, tiny honey jars and candy bars, mini champagne bottles, lip balm and bath sets, and small succulents.

Above decor, treats and favors, focus on the mama-to-be and surrounding her with things and people she loves. Make her to star of the show and everything else will fall into place.
