Last week was the ABC Kids Expo, which is shorthand for a million square feet of baby brands promoting their new products. We saw more than a few mind-blowing prototypes and cannot wait to introduce y’all to the final products as they roll out in 2016. In the meantime, here’s a quick summary of the future of baby gear.
Sparrows and nightingales are the new owls. Trendy new prints feature smaller, sleeker fowl on everything from Bebe au Lait’s new nursing scarves to Ergobaby’s updated swaddler (coming soon). Shiny stroller frames are so 2014. The sleekest new rides from Cybex, Mountain Buggy, UPPAbaby, and Baby Jogger (among others) are set on matte black frames. Sweater weather is having a moment. Gear prints are getting seasonal, with the most fashiony styles taking on a sweatery vibe; look for pops of houndstooth on upcoming versions of the Mountain Buggy Juno and Ergobaby Original, and a cozy knit collection of Maxi-Cosi staples (pictured). The Germophobes have been heard. The most consistent stroller upgrade at the show was an adjustment to where the handlebar rests when the stroller is folded and freestanding—just about every brand has made a move to get it off the ground. Green is the ‘it’ neutral. Call it Hunter, call it Forest, call it Cilantro—dark leafy green showed up in the gear previews for everyone from BOB to Nuna. Tracking, tracking, tracking. New monitoring devices track everything from baby’s heart rate and oxygen level to night terrors to ounces of breast milk consumed. The guessing game is officially over.
