There’s something so sweet about reading to a baby in the summertime—at the beach, on a picnic blanket, during a thunder storm. As the school year wraps, here are the books we can’t wait to read with our kiddos on vacation this year.
Hatsue Nakawaki’s sweet Wait! Wait! (originally published in Japan in 2002; available in the U.S. on July 9) follows a little one’s exploration of creatures in the natural world. The interactive Wiggle by Taro Gomi (due July 23) is sure to elicit giggles as toddler fingers become animal body parts. Burgeoning scribblers will get a kick out of The Day the Crayons Quit, which is playfully illustrated by one of our favorite kid lit artists, Oliver Jeffers. Caldecott honoree Laura Vaccaro Seeger’s newest is Bully (out July 16), about a bullying bull. Llama Llama is also dealing with the topic of bullying in Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, out August 6. Henry’s Map (coming on June 27) stars a cute pig who decides to map the farm where he lives. Of course, humor ensues. For more pig-centric comedy, it’s tough to beat Olivia. The first (and arguably best) book in the series is available in a rugged board book version that can stand up to being tossed in any summer tote. (Plus it showcases Olivia’s impressive sand sculpture skills, and offers a not-so-subtle reminder to apply sunscreen.) Also available in board book form are The Very Hungry Caterpillar (cue the ice cream and watermelon) and Harold and the Purple Crayon, which could inspire some imaginative summer journeys.
