Holiday cards are right up there with wedding invitations and birth announcements as an opportunity for your friends and family to totally judge your sense of style. For a leg-up on what’s cool and fresh this year, we asked some of the top stationers to report back on this season’s hottest trends. Here, the top five:

1. THE COLOR GRAY, spotted by Christina Butorac of Metro Baby Cards and Jennifer Parsons of Tiny Pine Press. “Charcoal gray is the new chocolate brown,” says Butorac.

2. HAPPY NEW YEAR CARDS, spotted by Tiffany Chan of and Mariam Naficy of “It’s fun, festive, and avoids the political correctness issue entirely,” explains Naficy.

3. VINTAGE FLAIR, spotted by Wendy Baglione of and Christina Butorac. “What’s old is new again,” declares Baglione. “We’re seeing a lot of damasks and jacquards, ornate patterns, and Country Western style fonts.”

4. FAUX-TEXTURED PAPER, spotted by Christina Butorac and Jennifer Parsons. “Instead of using actual textured paper, we scan the textures and print them digitally as a part of the background,” explains Parsons. “This can give the same effect without the actual cost of handmade paper.”

5. CANDIDS WITH ATTITUDE, spotted by Christina Butorac, Cornelia Bowen of Shuford Prints, and Jo-Ann Coe at Pumpkin Petunia. “Gone are the days of the posed family portrait—sitting on the beach in khakis and white,” says Coe. “People are opting for less “perfect” photos: A preteen rolling her eyes, a 3-year-old trying to run out of the frame, an 8-year-old daydreaming . . .”
