Here come the Holiday Gift Guides. Within the next week or two, just about every magazine and website will publish a list of the year’s “hottest” gifts to give and get. While we love browsing the guides, the truth is a baby’s first few holiday seasons are less about the actual gifts and more about the experience of discovering and opening them.

With that in mind, we asked Alton DuLaney, the Creative Director of Kate’s Paperie, for his favorite gift-wrapping supplies, plus some fresh ideas on how to create a magical gift-opening experience for tots.

Consider creating your own gift wrap out of craft paper decorated with festive stickers and rubber stamps that hold meaning to the child—such as his or her initials or favorite animal. Get some colorful card stock and cut out the recipient’s name in big block letters or simple holiday shapes (stars, trees, gingerbread men) and glue them to the gift boxes or wrap. Use glue to add glitter to the patterns printed on your gift wrap or create your own designs. Tie an embellishment—a small plush toy, box of crayons, mini picture book—to the outside of the box. Last but not least, shred tissue paper or leftover scraps of gift wrap to create confetti for a special surprise inside the gift box or bag.”

DuLaney’s “top five” picks for stylish wrapping supplies:

1. Whimsical wrap sheets

2. Ribbed metallic foil wraps

3. Vintage metallic threads

4. Handmade boxes

5. Fabulous tissue papers
