Now that summer has officially kicked off, city moms begin their mad hunt for pool access-renewing club memberships, mooching off friends-whatever it takes to find some splash time for the little ones. But before you toss baby in the float, consider these tips from MD Moms on keeping tender baby skin safe (and soft) through a summer drenched with chlorine and sunshine.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUNBLOCK. “Get a “water resistant” sunscreen that has at least an SPF 15 (preferably SPF 30+) and offers both UVA and UVB protection (broad spectrum). Reapply at least every 2-3 hours, no matter what the label says. Note: the ideal sunscreen should contain Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide-pure physical block ingredients, which work immediately upon application.”
SUIT UP WITH UV-PROTECTIVE GEAR. “We’re fans of Cabana Life‘s patented SkinSafe technology (not to mention, the cutest designs ever) found in their swimsuits, rash guards, sun hats and cover-ups.”
ACCESORIZE WITH A PURPOSE. “Hats should have a brim at least 2.5 inches wide. Sunglasses should offer 99-100% blockage for UV rays (check for ANSI-rated UVA/UVB protection) to protect delicate skin around the eyes and to shield the retina from UV damage.”
RINSE. “Seems pretty standard, we know, but chlorine can cause rashes, itching and dry skin-especially after prolonged exposure. All children should rinse off in fresh water after swimming, and kids with sensitive skin should avoid swimming in freshly chlorinated pools (judge this by the potency of the water smell).”
LUBE UP. “Judiciously apply a post-sun soother that contains antioxidants like Vitamins E and B5, green tea extract, grape seed oil, etc. Antioxidants not only provide critical environmental protection (so much for that ozone layer of ours), but may also help protect from and possibly reverse some of the damaging effects of the sun.
