The Search Is Over

A new iPhone app helps NYC parents find, um, anything.

The Search Is Over

The parenting apps just keep on comin'. The latest is BlueleoGuide, an at-your-fingertips directory of every imaginable children’s resource in the five boroughs. (Think Yelp, but organized for the needs and wants of parents.)

Blueleo features 6,000 resources (yes, six thousand) across 15 categories, including afterschool programs; birthday party venues; baby and kid stores; pediatricians; childcare agencies; and mommy classes. Within these broad categories, users can fine-tune searches. So let's say you're browsing the "Nursery Schools" category; you can narrow your search by educational disciplines (there are 19 of them, from Montessori to Quaker); or, search for a party entertainer by specialty—yoga, origami, mime. The "Things to Do" category turns up 42 different types of activities, from indoor nature centers to tennis courts. There are 2,000 after school programs, 400 party venues, 500 activity centers, and 300 private schools listed.

For most resources, Blueleo lists the address, website, and phone number, plus a description of the business or service and other related offerings. (Stores and kid-friendly restaurants include just the address, website and phone number.)  The app also includes a "Show Nearest" feature to help the user discover the resources that are geographically most convenient, and a map pops-up when the user clicks on a listing's address link. There's also an auto link to the phone number and the web address for every listing.

And for the begging question we just had to ask: How does it compare to iKidNY, which has gotten so much buzz? "There’s no other website or iPhone app that is similar in the kid space in the U.S.," declares founder and Tribeca mom of two Bahar Kural-Chawla, citing the app's expansive database and fine-tune searching capability. Blueleo is also part of a much bigger platform with its own website (blueleo.com), so members can rate and review listings, and tap into a virtual network of parents to answer questions, sell or access baby and household items, download school calendars, and more.
