Outdoor fitness classes for moms
Eighty-degree weather in April has most of us baring shoulders and, gulp, arms and legs waaaay sooner than we had planned. Here are three outdoor workouts intended to help new moms get toned fast.
Stroller classes aren’t for everyone, but we love the idea of Movin’ Mamas, a new cardio-Pilates hybrid debuting on May 3rd. Created by Pilates instructors Alana Reed (who had her first child in October) and Randi Stone, Movin’ Mamas mixes classic Pilates exercises with stroller cardio, so moms can workout with babies in tow. Classes are offered five days a week, in Central Park; eight moms per class. From $30 per class. Movinmamas.com
Loren Bidner, East Village father of five-month-old Jonah, has designed a low-impact but full-body cardiovascular workout through hula hooping. That’s right, hula hooping. It’s crazy fun and a total, sweaty workout that Bidner says isolates the core, lower abs and love handles. Bidner has been teaching Hoopclass for almost a decade, and counts Oprah and Anne Curry among his fans. Downtown classes are held at an outdoor space in Greenwich Village on Wednesdays, starting in May. Uptown moms can hoop in Central Park on Sundays. Classes are one hour and cost $15. Hoopclass.com
In Brooklyn, personal trainer Abby Weiss offers challenging morning workouts that start at Cadman Plaza Park with a warm-up, followed by a run/jog/walk through the park and lots of core work and calisthenics. Weiss tailors the class to suit every mom’s fitness level. Classes are 75 minutes, and are held on Tuesdays at 9:15am, and Saturdays at 8.30am. $20 per class.
