A great new portrait artist in the city
Something about the proliferation of moms with digital cameras has put a fresh spin on old-fashioned portraiture. Commissioned paintings have become cool all over again. So we were pretty excited to discover Sasha Kinens, a truly talented portrait artist who recently relocated to the New York area from Florence, Italy—where they know a thing or two about figurative painting.
Kinens has a studio in New Jersey, but visits families in New York, at their homes for commissions. Her work is realistic and sweet (pictured, a mom and child reading in bed). For portraits, Kinens photographs her subjects then produces three sketches. Parents choose one sketch for painting. Portaits start at $1,200 (for an 11X14) and usually take about two months to complete.
Kinens also produces traditional silhouette cut-outs ($150 each for a framed 8x10) and gorgeous custom nursery murals, which range in price from $500 for a simple painting on one wall to $1,500-$3,500 for multi-wall scenes with intricate details (think Bemelmans at the Carlyle).
