Where to find unique Halloween costumes

Be afraid: the most popular Halloween costumes this year, according to Ricky’s NYC, will be characters from Toy Story and Iron Man, and—rather predictably—princesses and fairies for the girls.

To find something you won’t see in every crosswalk during trick-or-treat rush hour, consider consignment store hopping. Clementine in the West Village has hard-to-find Babystyle costumes (0-18 months); pick from unicorns, ladybugs, bees and dragonflies ($7.99 to $23.99). At Monk’s Trunk in Brooklyn, we saw plenty to choose from, including a banana (9 months), a ladybug (9 months) and Teletubbies (2T-4T). Prices are $6.95 to $14.95. Jane’s Exchange in the Village is just starting to collect costumes—a penguin, a ladybug, an alien—and expects to have a huge selection that will range in price from just a few dollars to $10.

If second-hand isn’t your thing, we’re loving the costumes at Pottery Barn Kids this year—check out the super-cute skeleton, not-too-scary shark, and adorable horse.  Plus, a new PBK iPhone app allows you to see how each costume would look on your tot.
