Fall Theater Preview
The best new shows for tots
It's ticket-buying season in the City. But before you brave "Matilda" with your little ones, test their attention spans at one of these made-for-the-wee-set shows.
With kids ages 2 to 5 in mind, the 30-minute “Songs From Above” performance at the New Victory Theater eschews a plot and instead delivers a captivating display of puppetry, gentle music, sounds, and images—all in a tented room (runs November 8-17; New 42nd Street Studios, 229 West 42nd St.). Over in Central Park, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre will reprise its original “The Three Bears Holiday Bash,” a variety-style, 50-minute marionette puppet show that includes Baby Bear, Santa, and a “12 Days of Christmas” audience sing-along. The show runs November 12 through December 20; tickets go on sale the first week of October (enter the park on Central Park West, at 81st St.) On the live character front, the Wiggles will hit the stage for one day as part of their “Taking Off!” North American tour; there’s a new female Wiggle in the mix (October 1; Best Buy Theater, 145 W. 45th St.). Yo Gabba Gabba’s first-ever “A Very Awesome – Yo Gabba Gabba! Live – Holiday Show” will swing by the Beacon Theater December 20-22; expect the usual songs like Party In My Tummy, along with seasonal tunes (2124 Broadway). The Fresh Beat Band is also returning to the Theater at Madison Square Garden (November 29 and 30; Seventh Ave., between 31st and 33rd Sts.) And finally, Disney’s version of “Aladdin” is set to open at the New Amsterdam Theater this February. Tickets for groups of fifteen or more are on sale now (214 W. 42nd St.).
