Boom With A View
The best hotels to catch the fireworks
The Fourth falls on a Wednesday this year, which means most of us are stuck in the city, sans barbecues and watching the Macy’s fireworks on TV. Of course you could always camp out for five hours to hold a spot on the Hudson River, but we’re thinking the best option might be to book a hotel room with a view.
Ask for one of the west-facing Sky View rooms on the higher floors at the InterContinental Times Square (from $359); if you’re up for splurging (or splitting the cost with another family), there are also three Manhattan suites (from $2,000) that face directly over the Intrepid and provide a stellar vantage point. Be sure to book through in-house reservations (646.481.4269) rather than the front desk. 300 W. 44th St.
At the boutique hotel Ink48, request a Hudson Suite (from $700). There are also some north-facing King Deluxe rooms that may have a view, depending on where the barge is parked. 653 11th Ave., 212.757.0088.
The Mandarin Oriental has sweet views, too, and is offering an official July 4th Fantastic Fireworks on the Hudson package (from $850 per night), which includes a room with Hudson River views and breakfast. Unfortunately, a two-night stay is required. 80 Columbus Circle; 212.805.8800.
Other hotels like Distrikt and the W Hoboken probably have rooms that face the right direction, but they won’t guarantee an unobstructed view. On that note, no matter where you book, be sure the hotel will honor your request for specific views. If you decide to wing it and take to the streets, there’s an app that provides up-to-the-minute viewing information.
