The Swing Of Things

Dacia Designs entertains kids the old-fashioned way

We can all probably agree that playing with an iPhone app isn’t the best use of a toddler’s time. But it sure is tempting. Dacia Owens can relate. The Dallas mother-of-two stepped down from a corporate marketing job to spend more time with family and soon found herself drumming up DIY projects to avoid gadget overload. A simple tree swing she made brought so much joy to her brood that she turned the pet project into a part-time gig from home. Dacia Designs is a family affair; Owens and her husband cut and sand the round pine swings by hand. The kids dust them off and help select paint colors. Dacia herself stencils and paints the creations, which range from mod chevron patterns to graphic illustrations of words like Laugh and Joy. Then the clan secures each piece to 15 feet of manilla rope. We think they’re absolutely perfect for that big tree in the front yard. New styles are rolling in for fall and holiday (love the graphic snowflake designs), and personalization services such as monograms or collegiate motifs are always on offer. Swings are $50 each, on etsy.com.
