The Gotta Get It List: Summer 2012

Everything you need for a safe and stylish summer

With all due respect to the Solstice, we count Memorial Day weekend as the real kickoff to summer. Which means just about every mom we know is scrambling to stock up on hot weather essentials this week. Here are the things we’ll be snatching up for the season.

Baby sunscreen that meets the FDA’s new standards. We like (and trust) MD Moms’ Baby Silk Daily UV Shield, Episencial’s Sunny Sunscreen SPF 35, and the Honest Company’s Honest Sunscreen.

Sand toys that will keep them busy. For a long time. Sand ice cream cones trump sand castles. The Speck Seahorse Ice Cream Set is $14.99 at melissaanddoug.com.

A lead-free, anti-mold garden hose. Sprinkler time—not to mention hose slurping—is more comforting with a drinking water-safe hose like the ones made by Element. $39.99 for a 50-foot hose at groworganic.com.

Team USA spirit. Ralph Lauren’s new U.S. Olympic Collection for babies includes patriotic polos, tees, track jackets, baseball caps, bucket hats, rompers, and bubbles.

Ridiculous amounts of backyard (or sidewalk) fun. The Pumponator Balloon Pumping Station comes with 500 biodegradable water balloons; $19.99 at yoyo.com.

A rash guard that won’t cause a tantrum. The rash guard sets from Cabana Life are SPF and UV protective—and they come in super-cute patterns that’ll please even the pickiest toddlers; $50 per set at cabanalife.com.

BBQ fare that won’t cause precocious puberty. Stock up on hot dogs and burger patties made from grass-fed beef (with no pesticides, no antibiotics, and no hormones) at lacensebeef.com.

Something neon. A pair of Babiators in Limelight Lime offers 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Plus the flexible rubber frame is impact and shatter resistant; $19.99 at babiators.com.

A hostess gift that will get you invited back.
The best thing you can bring to a summertime soiree is a really, really good bottle of rosé champagne.
