Scout Review: The CYBEX PRIAM

Test-driving CYBEX’s hot new wheels.

There’s no questioning the aesthetic merits of the German-designed CYBEX PRIAM. But to find out if the luxe stroller’s performance lives up to its looks, our Editorial Director put it to the test. Cruising suburban streets just north of Manhattan with her 3-week-old baby girl, she broke in our fresh-out-of-the-box PRIAM with Lux Seat. Here’s everything you need to know about the most sophisticated stroller around.

The PRIAM made a stellar first impression when it arrived in just a few easy-to-assemble pieces. Putting it together takes 10-15 minutes max, and can pretty much be done sans instruction manual. If you’re using this stroller as your baby’s first ride as we did, consider buying the Carry Cot, or make sure that your car seat is compatible with the PRIAM (it fits both CYBEX and Maxi-Cosi infant seat adapters).

Three sets of wheels are offered with the PRIAM—“Light” for smooth surfaces, “All-Terrain” for serious bumps, and “Trekking” if your needs are somewhere in between. The Trekking tires performed extremely well on not-so-smooth sidewalks. Unless you plan on doing some serious off-roading, this option is
probably sufficient.

For a premium, do-it-all stroller, the PRIAM is reasonably easy to fold (with one hand)—and it folds with the Lux Seat still attached. You can also recline the seat flat with one hand. It's simple to adjust the height of the PRIAM’s handle bar, and it was “more comfortable than most” for a 6’4” dad to push. Thumbs up for the denim(ish) twill fabric that spot-cleans easily and a storage basket that's spacious and expandable but more importantly, easy to access (and easy to keep securely closed with a handy magnetic closure). The foot brake is a cinch to use, too—you push it down rather than kicking it up, meaning it’s gentle on pedicures.

The bottom line: With a starting price of $999, the PRIAM doesn’t come cheap, but CYBEX thought of everything with this stroller. The ride’s just as smooth as it looks, and since it accommodates children up to 55 pounds, you’ll get your money’s worth.
