2013 Buzz Guide: Nursery Design
The biggest trends of the year
We are thrilled to announce that the co-founders of Project Nursery have joined the StrollerTraffic panel of experts, as our resident Design Mavens. They’ll be advising us (and you!) on cool finds and emerging trends in the world of nursery design—starting with these seven fresh looks for 2013.
Lucite goes natural. Clear cribs are no longer reserved for the ultra-modernist. Lucite looks are being paired with blonde woods for a more down-to-earth feel in the nursery.
Gold and glamorous. Shimmery metallics in warm gold tones are showing up all over the nursery, from side tables accents to lighting, mirrors, and wallpaper.
Royal fervor. In anticipation of the royal birth later this year, designers are already adding royal tufts in custom colors and fabrics to crib paneling.
Emerald green. When Pantone makes an announcement, designers listen. The new “it” color will undoubtedly trickle down into the world of nursery design in all it’s jewel-toned glory.
Bumperless bedding. In response to the increased scrutiny surrounding the safety of crib bumpers, more and more manufacturers are providing a decorative fitted-sheet option to mimic the look of the traditional crib bumper.
Bold stripes. Painted stripes, whether horizontal, vertical, or zig-zagged, are here to stay for one more year. Even ceilings are getting in on the action.
Sophistication. The matchy-matchy nursery has gone by the wayside. Current design is about a collaboration of vintage pieces and furnishings from grown-up sources—like eclectic finds from parents’ travels—rather than from the usual baby stores.
